Black Forest and beyond to Switzerland

We've visited 3 very different waterfalls over the past 3 days. Triberg Falls cascading through the beautiful Black Forest with fairy-tale undergrowth, autumn leaves and hidden squirrels. The Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen are very broad and majestic and lure hoardes of tourists to catch a tiny boat up to the whitewash. The Trummelbach Falls are 10 spiralling thunderous falls inside a rocky cliff fed by glaciers. All very impressive. Trummelbach Falls probably won "most popular" with us for sheer excitement, danger and noise.
Today we took trains and cable cars to get to the top of Schilthorn, near Lauterbrunnen. The day was warm and sunny and we took in magnificent views of the Jungfrau, Eiger and Monch mountains along the way. At the top the lookout is named Piz Gloria after it was used in a James Bond movie "At Her Majesty's Secret Service". Yes, apparently the worst of all Bond films. Yes we saw some shorts and a scenic touristy video about the mountainous Oberland. Yes there was a total whiteout meaning "zero" visibility. Photos were interesting.
Off to Italy in the next few days. Camper is coping well. The driving is spectacular. The driver is coping well too.

  1. All these photos are making me nostalgic for when we were in Switzerland all those years ago. I remember the Trummelbach Falls, but don't remember the mountains, because we didn't see them for the 2 weeks we were there, too hazy to see the peaks and we never really even saw the sky. And Mike was desperate to see the Eiger having read so much about it in his climbing days. He will be green with envy.

As you are going to Italy next, I got out my diary to re-read about our Italian trip, when we were based at Stresa. It is a lovely part of the world. A great day trip is to the Borromean Islands with their gardens and palaces, and to the cliff monastery of Santa Caterina to see the medieval chapel, frescoes and the mummified body of a bishop? in a glass casket. Bellissima (not the bishop who looked like a piece of dried leather). I'm sure that you will have a wonderful time where ever you go.

Have a limoncello con giacho on a lake somewhere for me!! The kids better have a gelato each (Pip is very dismissive of our Australian gelato).

Reading your Blog-news and Jood's e-mails make us feel we are travelling...sort of..behind you..! (If only...!!!)
But it's great to read your enthousiastic stories and the kids reactions.!!(Are they making their own diaries ("scrapbooks"..with cards/tickets..and other collectables.) as well..would love to see them when you are back home again..!
We received a lovely card by mail..many thanks..! (Saskia got hers too..!)
Stories are very interesting..(and "scary"..for Mums...) when you describe the narrow hairpin-roads..hardly any visibility..and deep valleys on one side..!
But then I realize, you've already DONE it..and you are all O.K...and on your way to more beautiful parts of Europe..!
And I KNOW you are a good responsible driver, Pete..!!
You are sooo lucky to be able to experience it all...even going to places you still remember from 19years ago..!
    (I know that feeling.)
    Will write an e-mail soon..
    All our love..
    Mam & Dad.
